Joining the 'In' Crowd

So I finally get around to checking my email and discover my family is blogging. Honestly a bit of a surprise.

I'm staying busy with work. I left Ft. Worth this morning and am holed up for the night just north of Chicago. Tomorrow I swap out some cars and head right back down, with a possible stop for the night in Fayetteville.

About this diet thing... Well, I'm not really on a diet. I eat whatever sounds good. I just eat less of it more often. Here are some tips for all of you attempting the dieting thing:

- Breakfast should be the biggest meal you eat. Ever. The giant 22 oz steak for dinner is out. Try to make it a well balanced meal with a little bit of everything. I know this is easier said than done. I'm pretty bad about it myself. The idea behind the big breakfast is to get your body started working again after a night of sleep. A cup of coffee is also quite useful for kick starting the metabolism.

- The goal is to eat 5 or 6 times a day, but smaller portions. A good breakfast, snack, small lunch, snack, smaller dinner, snack. Snacks should be small, like a piece of fruit or a granola bar. Your last snack should be eaten at least an hour or two before you go to sleep. If you get hungry before you go to bed and can't sleep due to the snarling beast in your stomach try eating some celery, easy on the peanut butter. Celery burns more calories to be digested than you consume eating it. The perfect late night snack.

- Carbs are not bad, if eaten in proper portions. Portions of carbs will depend on how physically active you are throughout the day. The less active you are the fewer carbs you should eat.

- Slimfast (Tony) is not supposed to be drank with a meal, but instead as a meal replacement. I will sometimes drink a Slimfast first thing in the morning when I'm in a hurry to get things started until I can grab some more food later.

No one has the same chemical makeup, so these tips may not work for all of you. But it's worth a try.

And now I'm off to sleep...

Anthony! I'm glad you posted a message. You've worked a lot in the computer field so blogging probably comes easy to you. For a long time I wondered what the word "blog" meant. Just lately I stumbled across the definition ... a web log. weblog. we(blog) Okay. I get it now. Miles behind everyone else, but I finally get it.

I have a recent picture of you made at Mandy's reception and you look healthy, handsome and happy.

Stay safe, dear Anthony, I love you.

Hey, Anthony! I'm glad you joined us. The information you shared is very helpful and makes sense. Do you do any exercising?

I think his exercising consists of dating.

You are so absolutely hilarious mom. :P

To answer your question Aunt Linda, I do not exercise. I should be exercising but I'm craving some gym time more than anything and can't afford that right now. I can give some advice on that as well though.

The best thing you can do for weight loss as far as exercise goes is to walk. A moderate to fast paced walk for at least one hour. Walking is a low intesity exercise, meaning that your heart rate shouldn't exceed 60% of your max heart rate. Low intensity exercise keeps your heart rate at the right level to burn the fat that is so hard to get rid of.

Below is an excerpt from the library on www.calorie-count.com:

During exercise, our body system employs both carbohydrates and fat to create energy for muscular work and other metabolic processes that operate within the body. Carbohydrate is stored in the muscles as blood glucose. It is the first to burn and most easily. Fat, in contrast, takes a longer time but it¼s absolutely inexhaustible. At low-intensity exercises, below 60% of Maximum Heart Rate, the body uses fundamentally fat rather than carbohydrate as its prime source of fuel. However, at high-intensity (>80%Maximum Heart Rate) exercises, it is more efficient to burn carbohydrates as a source of fuel due to the limited amount of oxygen supply available. This is because it takes more oxygen to burn fat than to oxidize carbohydrates. When you are exercising at low intensity, the body energy-generating mechanism switches to fat as the primary source of fuel.

--------

Me again...
The first thing to do is figure out your max heart rate. The formula for this is different for men and women. Concidering that most of us are pretty much non-athletic the formula is as follows:
Male (220 - age) Female (226 - age)

So I am 26 years old. 220-26=194

194 x 0.6 = 116.4

So 116 is 60% of my max heart rate. I would want to exercise for an extended period of time while maintaining a heart rate of 116 or just below that.

For those of you wanting to include a more cardiovascular routine but are not in shape for running, do aerobics.

I had no idea you knew so much about this stuff! But I suppose it makes sense...

Hello Anthony. I enjoyed reading your post and just wanted to add my two cents worth on Slim Fast...

Reading recent posts brought back memories of my brother making outrageous statements to any little sister or friend within ear shot. He could make the statement without so much as a smirk slipping onto his face. Then he would sit back for a moment to see if anyone would get the joke/sarcasm. If you did, he had the most wicked laugh. I love his laugh! If you didn't get it, he just rolled his eyes. I would hold my breath hoping someone got the joke so he would laugh.

There was a commercial on the television in those days with a 'mad butcher' named Fred (which just happened to be Tony's first name). The commercial would end with the mad butcher laughing. It was identical to Tony's wicked laugh. Sometimes when he'd make one of his friends feel really dumb for not catching the joke, the friend would say something along the lines of 'Okay Fred, you're so funny'. Tony didn't appreciate the name calling! Sometimes a wrestling match would ensue...

I was a well entertained child.

Okay, that's my trip down memory lane. I can just hear Tony making that statement about Slim Fast. I just wish I had been there to hear the wicked laughter that followed!

Anthony,
I too have a craving for something out of reach right now....I have been thinking for a few years now that, if I just had a bowflex, I could firm up and lose weight. I see the commercials with the 50-year-old grandmother looking like a model, and I think, "Yes, that's what I need." And then I have to laugh at myself, because human nature always lures us into the magical realm of "if" so we can avoid something that requires discipline. I know my weight loss will require discipline, rather than a magical bowflex; but it sure is more appealing to procrastinate while I wait for that all-promising equipment to appear in my house.

Walking is my preferred form of exercise, so I really enjoyed the information you shared. I admire the fact that you manage your weight and look great. I know the time you spend on the road doesn't make it easy for you. Great discipline on your part!

Karen,
I loved the trip down memory lane! We all do love Tony's dry sense of humor. Perhaps Donna and Erin not as much as the rest of us, since they live with it full-time. But the rest of us enjoy the chance to see it in action.
